Department for Chernobyl Contingent Patients

Mechnikov Hospital features a highly respected unit: the Department for Chernobyl Contingent Patients. Here, medical treatment is combined with a deep understanding of the life experiences of those who survived the man-made disaster. For 29 years, we have been helping individuals living with cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurological disorders associated with the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster and prolonged exposure to radiation.

Patients come to us with diverse histories. Some experience months of chronic fatigue, while others face shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias, blood pressure fluctuations, or memory issues. The first thing they receive is not just a medical examination, but the reassurance that their story matters and will be heard. The primary goal of the department is not merely to treat chronic diseases, but to create a safe and compassionate environment for those who have frequently experienced health-related limitations throughout their lives.

Expert Opinion

"Treating individuals affected by Chernobyl always involves managing complex pathologies. The heart, blood vessels, nervous system, and metabolism can all be compromised simultaneously. As a result, standard medical approaches are often ineffective here. We carefully monitor even the slightest changes in a patient's condition, adjusting therapy gradually while assessing the body's response. Our mission is to provide patients with a sense of stability and control, showing them that even with a combination of complex diagnoses, it is possible to live an active, fulfilling life without constant fear for one's health. Chernobyl contingent patients are a unique demographic, requiring an equally unique, attentive, and professional approach."

Our team comprises specialists from various medical fields, enabling us to effectively manage patients with multiple comorbidities without compromising the quality of care.

Comfort and Safety.

Everything—from the inpatient facilities to therapeutic adjustments—is designed to ensure the patient feels secure and understands every step of their treatment journey.

Conditions We Treat

The majority of our patients are admitted with cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, hypertensive crises, and arrhythmias. These are often accompanied by neurological symptoms, including memory impairment, loss of concentration, headaches, and balance disorders. The years following the Chernobyl disaster have impacted these body systems the most; therefore, our therapeutic and neurological teams work in close collaboration.

The complexity of these pathologies requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. Each case is reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists: an internist, a neurologist, a cardiologist, and occasionally an endocrinologist or a rheumatologist. This collaboration allows us to identify the root cause of the patient's deteriorating health and to tailor treatment plans that will not exacerbate coexisting conditions.

Diagnostic Process

To establish an accurate diagnosis, patients have access to the hospital's full range of diagnostic capabilities, including laboratory tests, instrumental diagnostics, X-rays, ECG, ultrasound, and heart rate monitoring. In complex cases, our specialists hold medical councils to determine the diagnosis collaboratively.

This stage is crucial, as symptoms in Chernobyl contingent patients can stem from multiple concurrent causes: the heart reacts to blood pressure changes, the nervous system to metabolic disorders, and blood vessels to chronic processes. We do not overlook a single detail.

Treatment

Treatment is always personalized. It may include pharmacotherapy, diet therapy, therapeutic exercise, and physiotherapy—all in accordance with current medical protocols and tailored to the patient's medication sensitivities.

Our primary goal is to stabilize the patient's condition, minimize the risk of complications, and ensure long-term support that can be continued on an outpatient basis.

Following discharge, the patient transitions to the care of their family physician or a local specialist in their community. If necessary, they can return for further consultation or readmission.

Inpatient Facilities

The department offers various room types: five six-bed wards, two double-occupancy rooms, one triple-occupancy room, and one single-occupancy superior comfort room.

We provide our patients with:

  • comprehensive nutritional plans tailored to their medical needs;
  • continuous monitoring of vital signs;
  • cleanliness, exceptional care, and comfort throughout their stay.

Relatives are encouraged to visit, as family support significantly improves emotional well-being and aids the recovery process.

Recommendations for Patients

Chernobyl contingent patients often develop a habit of enduring symptoms, not viewing them as a reason to seek medical attention. Therefore, it is crucial to:

  • seek timely medical help for shortness of breath, edema, chest pain, or memory impairment;
  • never alter prescribed treatments without consulting a doctor;
  • undergo regular follow-up examinations;
  • maintain contact with your physician, even during periods of improved health.

We are here to ensure you receive high-quality, clear, and safe medical care. Do not postpone seeking help—we will help you maintain stability and a high quality of life!
