Vascular Surgery
Vascular surgery is one of the most complex yet crucial fields of modern medicine. The functioning of the entire body—heart, brain, limbs, and vital organs—depends on vascular patency. At Mechnikov Hospital, this field is highly developed: the Department of Vascular Surgery combines a profound scientific foundation, an experienced team, and cutting-edge technologies, enabling us to save patients even in the most severe clinical cases.

We perform complex surgeries for abdominal aortic aneurysms and Leriche syndrome, arterial bypass grafting and prosthetics, as well as distal reconstructions for critical limb ischemia. This allows us to avoid amputations and preserve limb mobility.

Our specialists restore blood flow in the tibial vessels, performing combined procedures with revascularization and minimal amputations, which saves the leg even in complicated cases.

We apply modern techniques for treating varicose veins, including endovenous laser ablation (EVLA),sclerotherapy, and ambulatory phlebectomy (Muller and Varady techniques). For the treatment of thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome, we utilize thrombectomies, venous bypasses (Palma and May-Husni procedures),valve reconstructions, and combined treatment protocols for trophic ulcers.

The department provides round-the-clock care for major vessel trauma, thrombosis, and embolisms. Our doctors perform embolectomies, restore arterial integrity, excise false aneurysms, and conduct vascular reconstructions following tumor resections.
To assess vascular health and hemodynamics, we utilize expert-class Vivid-7 ultrasound systems (General Electric, USA)—a safe, non-invasive, and highly accurate diagnostic method. In complex or equivocal cases, our doctors employ radiopaque angiography on the Philips Integris V 3000 system and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) angiography (Toshiba EXCELART Vantage XGV). This approach provides 3D vascular imaging, detects even the slightest luminal changes, and allows for the precise planning of future interventions.

High Surgical Standards
The operating theaters are equipped with everything necessary for high-tech interventions. We utilize blood reinfusion systems to avoid donor blood transfusions, endovenous laser devices for intravascular procedures, high-quality instruments, and advanced suture materials.
Patient safety is ensured by an experienced team of anesthesiologists utilizing the latest pain management techniques—both general and regional—reducing physiological stress and ensuring a comfortable postoperative recovery.
Minimally Invasive Interventions — Less Trauma, Better Outcomes
The core principle of our department is minimal surgical trauma with maximum efficacy. Minimally invasive technologies allow surgeries to be performed through tiny incisions or punctures, which significantly shortens the postoperative period, reduces the risk of complications, and enables patients to return to their normal lives faster. Such interventions are particularly important for elderly patients or those with chronic conditions, where every day of rehabilitation matters.
Rehabilitation — Return to a Fulfilling Life
Following surgery, patients undergo comprehensive rehabilitation: physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise, massage, and follow-up examinations. This approach improves microcirculation, accelerates healing, and mitigates the risk of recurrent vascular lesions.
Our Medical Team
The department is staffed by highest- and first-category physicians, as well as faculty members from the Department of Surgery No. 2. Our team regularly completes fellowships at leading European clinics, participates in scientific congresses and conferences, and integrates international vascular treatment standards into clinical practice.
As a result, our patients receive care on par with European medical centers—right here at home.
Why Choose Us
- Academic foundation — confidence in the outcome. We combine clinical practice with scientific research, ensuring our patients receive the most advanced, internationally validated treatment methods.
- High-precision diagnostics — a guarantee of the right decision. State-of-the-art ultrasound, angiography, and CT systems allow us to detect even the slightest vascular changes and accurately determine the optimal surgical strategy.
- Minimally invasive surgery — less pain, faster recovery. Procedures are performed through miniature access points, reducing the risk of complications and shortening hospital stays.
- Comprehensive approach — from diagnosis to rehabilitation. We support our patients at every stage: from the initial consultation to full recovery, including physiotherapy and preventive care programs.
- Experience and expertise. Every physician has years of practice in complex vascular surgeries and continuously hones their skills according to European standards.
