Center for Cerebral Neurosurgery

The Center for Cerebral Neurosurgery at Mechnikov Hospital provides care for patients with a wide range of brain diseases and injuries. A significant part of our practice involves the treatment of complex neurosurgical pathologies: we treat brainstem tumors, posterior cranial fossa tumors, severe traumatic brain injuries, as well as the sequelae of combat and mine-blast injuries. Patients are frequently admitted to our Center after being declined treatment or referred from other medical institutions. This is due to our team's extensive experience in managing complex neurosurgical pathologies and critical conditions. A distinct feature of the Center is its unique clinical experience in treating penetrating combat traumatic brain injuries, which is currently considered one of the largest in the world!

Why Patients with Complex Brain Pathologies Are Referred to Us
One of Ukraine's Leading Centers for Cerebral Neurosurgery

We perform high-tech surgeries for brain tumors, intracranial hemorrhages, severe traumatic brain injuries, and other complex neurosurgical pathologies. Patients are frequently referred to our Center from other medical institutions.

Unique Experience in Treating Combat Brain Injuries

Our Center's specialists have operated on over 3,000 patients with combat injuries to the skull and brain. This scale of practice has established a unique expertise in treating complex neurotrauma and its sequelae.

High Annual Volume of Neurosurgical Operations

Approximately 1,300 brain surgeries are performed at the Center annually. The high volume of surgical practice allows the team to continuously work with complex clinical cases and maintain a high level of neurosurgical excellence.

Main Areas of Expertise of the Center for Cerebral Neurosurgery
Neuro-oncology

Surgical treatment of brain tumors of various localizations: gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic tumors, pituitary adenomas, neuromas (vestibular schwannomas),posterior cranial fossa tumors, skull base tumors, ventricular system tumors, cranio-orbital tumors, and cranial bone tumors.

Neurosurgery of Traumatic Brain Injury and Its Sequelae

Treatment of brain contusions of varying severity, intracranial hematomas, depressed skull fractures, penetrating injuries, and mine-blast traumas. We also perform surgical treatment for the sequelae of injuries: cranial bone defects, post-traumatic hydrocephalus, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, and cranial nerve lesions.

Surgery for Hydrocephalus and Brain Cysts

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of various forms of hydrocephalus (congenital, acquired, obstructive, aresorptive, normal pressure),as well as the treatment of cerebral arachnoid cysts.

Pathology of the Peripheral Nervous System

Treatment of neurocompression syndromes of the upper and lower extremities, carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes, and peripheral nerve injuries and wounds.

Treatment of Neurovascular and Cranial Pain Syndromes

Surgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and hemifacial spasm.

Treatment of Neuroinfections

Surgical treatment of brain abscesses and other infectious lesions of the central nervous system.

A Strong Team of Neurosurgeons with Extensive Clinical Experience
Head of the Center - An Internationally Recognized Neurosurgeon

The Center is headed by Andrii Sirko, MD, PhD, Professor, and Honored Doctor of Ukraine. He is the author of over 300 scientific publications, 8 monographs, and 23 patents.

A Team of Experienced Neurosurgeons

A team of 8 neurosurgeons specializes in brain pathologies. The clinical experience of individual specialists exceeds 25 years of practice.

High Expertise in Neuro-oncology

The neurosurgeons at our Center specialize in the treatment of brain tumors. We routinely perform surgeries for gliomas, meningiomas, posterior cranial fossa tumors, ventricular system tumors, and other complex neuro-oncological pathologies.

Experience in Treating Critically Ill Patients

The Center's physicians possess extensive experience in providing neurosurgical care to patients in severe conditions—with traumatic brain injuries, intracranial hemorrhages, combat brain injuries, and other conditions requiring immediate neurosurgical intervention.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork

Patient care is conducted on the principle of multidisciplinary collaboration. Treatment involves neurosurgeons, neurologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and other specialists, which ensures a comprehensive approach to managing complex brain diseases.
